AARP

City Insurance Center

As we age and grow, our individual needs change. AARP is there for adults 50 and older who want to be protected and empowered. AARP provides it 37 million plus members with access to discounted insurance and other products like food, travel and apparel. AARP only works with the best brands to ensure that their members are getting the most for their money.

Founded in 1958 as the National Retired Teachers Association by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired school principal, to “promote her philosophy of productive aging, and in response to the need of retired teachers for health insurance.” Dr. Andrus began a campaign to find a health insurance company that would be willing to insure the aging, as Medicare was not introduced until 1965. Once an insurance company agreed to insure those who were 50 and older, Dr. Andrus moved to have more beneficial services for seniors offered like a discount mail order pharmacy service. As word spread about the NRTA, more and more American seniors wanted access to a similar program. Dr. Andrus founded AARP, which is open to all American seniors.

Today, AAPR has grown into much more than offering those 50 and older health insurance. Seniors can find home insurance, auto insurance, disability insurance and more. Seniors can also find articles about staying healthy, staying active and even finding love. AARP has become a great resource those who are still getting out and enjoying life, but may want to save a little money along the way.

AARP also aims to educate seniors about tough choices and legislation that may affect their lives now and in the future. AARP offers insight into health care laws, Social Security news and Medicare and Medicaid news. The AARP Foundation is a charity designed to help seniors meet basic everyday needs, like food, financial support and housing. Along with many partners, like Habitat for Humanity, the AARP Foundation improves the lives of thousands of seniors every year.

While the AARP Foundation is focused on service, the company itself also encourages its employees and seniors to give back by volunteering.

While AARP was founded to help aging Americans get health insurance, it has grown to become more like a way of life for those 50 and older.
